But, what if the pixie did deliver the invitation?
Would Nellie accept or choose to ignore it?
She was a polite, good-hearted gnome, but she was also unpredictable. There were whispers that she was a bit too free-spirited for such a conservative village.
It was all anyone could talk about when she painted fancy colored stripes on her front door, but he didn't care. He liked the stripes and one afternoon, he suggested that she paint her milk pail to match. She did and the other gnomes went wild with gossip.
The following morning, she invited him for tea and biscuits. They laughed about the rumors, discussed what the other gnomes might do if she painted her horse cart with stripes and laughed some more. The sound filled Hobson's heart with joy and he knew right then and there that he loved her. The question was, did she feel the same.
That was why tonight was so important. Under a full moon, he would profess his love for her and cross his fingers (and toes) that she felt the same.
The pixie burst through the front door; out of breath and a bit disheveled. She squealed and clapped her hands. Pixie dust sparked all around her as she told him that Nellie had accepted. She would meet him at the old stump at midnight.
He glanced at the clock on the wall. It was almost midnight. He wiped the sweat off his brow and smoothed his beard, then grabbed the bouquet of flowers he had picked earlier in the day and set off for his first date with the most wonderful gnome he had ever met.
