Trolls have the ability to come up with delicious recipes with whatever is on hand. Today, my fellow foodies, I bring to you my Da's recipe for Tomato and Pickled Egg Cake.
Now, I know what you're thinking. How can you get so much delicious flavor into one cake, right? It's all in the hands, my friends. Read on and you'll see what I mean. There's not alot of ingredients in this recipe, so for you humans, it shouldn't be too hard. This recipe feeds an entire family of trolls.
(Note from the author - never try any of Knoxby's recipes. They are not for human consumption)
Tomato and Pickled Egg Cake
Ingredients
2 over ripe tomatoes. (Make sure these beauties are on the squishy side.)
3 Pickled Eggs. (You can use 4 pickled eggs, if you like your cake more pickled. Also, the best pickled eggs are made by the Harpy at The Quiet Harpy Inn. They cost a boars' note each, but they are well worth it. If you can't get to The Quiet Harpy Inn, you can make your own by dropping whatever eggs you have on hand into a bucket of vinegar, garlic and onion. Leave them for a few days and voila! homemade pickled eggs.) I like my pickled eggs aged a good month before use. They're extremely tart.
2 handfuls of flour. The best flour comes from Needy Natty in Grimhold marketplace. She leaves the beetles in and it gives the cake a nice crunchy texture.
1 Salted Melon. Instead of sugar, we trolls like to add a salted melon. It mixes well with the vinegar from the pickled eggs.
1 sack of acorns. Pound and grind up the entire sack of acorns until you have an oily consistency. It's up to you if you want to remove the cap on top. I like to save those for later. They taste good when roasted and dipped in Boggle Hole juice.
2 Lemons. Lemons are not common around here, so you'll have to make a trip to Sour Sadie's stall. The witch has sucked on so many lemons, her lips are permenantly puckered. Tell Sadie you're stopping at Natty's and she might give you a discount. You humans add baking powder, trolls improvise.
Dump all ingredients into a large bowl and start pounding with your fists. Make sure you grind those acorns good or you're going to end up with bruised and battered knuckles. Keep pounding until everything smashed together. Next you're going to want to grab a hold of your cake mix and squish to together. Really get in there and mix it up. On a side note, the pounding and squishing are great stress relievers.
Once your cake mix is mixed, it should look like a lumpy multi colored blob. Leave the lumps. They help the cake to rise and it's a nice
surprise when you bit into it. You never know what you'll get. It could be a chunk of pickled egg, tomato skin or lemon pulp. Make sure you have a pan handy. Make you grease it with a thick layer of swamp goo. Drop your cake mixture into the pan, shape it and set it in the middle of your cook fire. Cover with a lid or a larger pan. If you don't have either, use a good amount of dirt to fully cover your cake.
It won't take long before your tomato and pickled egg cake starts to rise. Keep an eye on it. If it starts to rise too much, it'll be too airy to eat. My Da let it rise one time until it looked like a balloon. There were troll farts for a month afterwards.
Pull your cake off the fire and let it cool. Once cooled, help yourself to a big piece, sit back and enjoy.
Until next time, my little foodies.
