Self doubt is a nasty little thing, isn't it?
I'm sure you've all experienced it at one point or another.
Can I be honest?
It has literally consumed me for many months now. I got to the point where I felt depressed, started (internally) beating myself up and I was searching for validation from anyone and everyone, so that he/she/they could tell me that my books are good enough, if I have made the right choices.
I almost convinced myself that I should be writing in one particular genre, because that's where the readers and money are at.....until this morning.
I came across Nora Roberts' blog yesterday and really enjoyed how real she is. The most recent blog post made me sit up and pay attention. It's here if you want to read it. It's all about her readers telling her what and how to write, but there was one thing she said that really got to me.
"No. I need to write what I’m driven to write."
Write what I'm driven to write; not write to market, not write because it's all about business & money, but what she's driven to write.
And before you say anything, I know she's a bestselling author with money, years of experience and a huge publishing house behind her. I know she can afford to write whatever she wants. But, that one sentence made me see that I can, too and it's okay.
I also went back and re-read two blog posts I had written that made me feel ten times better.
Here & Here
If you're struggling with self doubt and feeling conflicted, it's okay. Try taking a step back and give yourself time to work through it. In the end, you will find the answer/s you're searching for.
Happy writing. Have a great day.
